After my exhausting 7 Mar walkup the Rhyd Ddu path to Snowdon, and still feeling far from well, I should have taken a rest day on 8 Mar. But not on another clear blue sky day. So I was off to the Carneddau, passing Lynnau Mymbyr, the lakes just to the West of Capel Curig. And of course I stopped there to view the Snowdon Horseshoe!
Then it was onto the steep, narrow and gated lane up from Tal y Bont into Cwm Eigiau, one of the most
beautiful parts of Snowdonia. With Craig Eigiau at the end of the rocky ridge to the right.
View from the small parking area into the Cwm.
I started very slowly, feeling exhausted and badly dehydrated. But spirits were kept high by the wonderful
weather, the lowish snow line and the view of Foel Grach in front.
This was steeper than it looks!
Carnedd Llewelyn in the background behind Craig-fawr.
I was progressing slowly!
But enjoying the view.
Very much enjoying the view of vast amounts of snow on Carnedd Llewelyn.
But it was the small rocky outcrop that forms the summit of Craig Eigiau that was to be my high point of
the day. Exhaustion and using up my 3 litres of drink at an alarming rate decided that for me.
But the views to the South West over the Bwlch Eryl Farchog Ridge between Penywaun Wen and Pen yr Helgi Du were lovely.
Looking at Carnedd Llewelyn from between the rocks on Craig Eigiau.
And without the rocks!
More views of Carnedd Llewelyn as I started back down from a very peaceful lunch stop. I'd even found
a few metres of steep and icy snow to practice using my ice axe as a brake while glissading!
The slope that was steeper than it looks. Very icy and I used crampons to avoid slipping.
Then a slow descent back into Cwm Eigiau. This view perhaps showing most of all why it is such a favourite
of mine. Almost guaranteed to provide very quiet and peaceful walks away from the madding crowds.
