Winter was far from finished after my 20 & 22 Feb ascents of Snowdon, so 7 March saw me back. To tackle Snowdon via the Rhyd Du path, with a diversion at the start of Bwlch Main, (above), to come over the full length of the icy and snowy ridge.
I was slow as my mysterious long term 'flue like bug had hit as I started the climb. But that meant more
stops to enjoy views like the Nantlle Ridge behind me as the sun rose on a day that was to remain cloudless.
Onto the steeper sections now, and an even better view of the Nantlle Ridge.
A rest stop, and a chance to look at the surrounding mountains on such a superb day. A day when, apart
from 2 guys who had overtaken me early on, I was to have the route totally to myself until the summit.
All low down snow had gone, but there was plenty to be found higher up as I took a break at the main
snow line to look at the Bwlch Main ridge I was going to have to cross before too long.
The second half of Bwlch Main, up to the summit of Snowdon.
I was still feeling unwell and quite weak by now as I headed up though the icy snow, and decided to make
the top of the ridge where the South Ridge Path comes in, and then head back down.
But standing at the end of Bwlch Main, I really wanted to cross that ridge, (partly obscured in this view), in such
great winter conditions. Thankfully my adrenalin wanted to cross as well and that pushed my strength back up!
But first a look to the East at Y Lliwedd, and, further away, Moel Siabod.
Then it was best foot, (complete with Grivel 12 point crampons), forward to gain the top of the ridge.
Very narrow here, and at times right on the very top.
Very pleased to have done that section. Either right on the very top, or just a foot or two down to the right.
And very glad that my vertigo, which can be a real problem, was having a day off!
A look back at an earlier part of my route up over the top of the Cliffs at Llechog.
With the Nantlle Ridge and Mynydd Mawr behind.
The path up to Snowdon continues over Bwlch Main.
Bwlch Main behind me.
And Bwlch Main in font!
A look back at the most exciting part of my route over the Bwlch Main ridge.
A pause to get my breath back, and a look at the mountains to the East.
Moel Hebog behind.
Snowdon in front, and not that far to go now.
I was slow over this section. Pausing often to take in the magnificent snow scenes around me.
Scenes I was enjoying in the solitude that these wonderful surroundings were giving me.
As the sun sparkled from a cloudless blue sky.
Conditions that were to last not just for today, but well into the coming week.
Moel Hebog with the sea clearly visible behind.
Beddgelert, where I stay when in Snowdonia, is down there somewhere!
Y Lliwedd.
Amazingly, considering how I had felt part way up, I was on the summit. Where I met a guy who kindly took my photo, with
my route up over the Bwlch Main ridge nicely in view behind me. He pointed out the Irish Hills in the very far
distance. Apparently only visible from here on a few days every year.
It wasn't just a walker I met on the summit, but a seagull as well. He'd had an easy climb up! Maybe he
was looking at the amazing snow scenes I'd come up here to see. Follow the link to enjoy those scenes with me.
