I had planned just two long hikes for my four day trip. Allowing a rest day between the hikes plus a spare day in case of bad weather. I love rain walking when training in the UK, but in Bavaria I prefer to see more than the inside of a cloud after putting in a lot of effort to get to a mountain summit! So Friday 20th October was "spare", and was primarily used as another rest day. Much needed after another long and tiring day on the Thursday.
But it was a pretty good day with some cloud and increasing sunshine, so I decided that after lunch at my hotel in Farchant, I'd stroll out to see the Kuhlflucht Waterfalls. These are on the West facing slopes of the Hoher Fricken that I had hiked up the previous day and I didn't expect a large voulme of water running over the falls as there hadn't been much recent rain.
The falls are spread over a long distance, starting very high up. It wasn't far after leaving the village along a gently rising track that I came to the last of the series before the water ran into the Loisach river. There was not an enormous flow: their steep origin from very high up must mean rain onto the Hoher Fricken will drain quickly.
A bridge over the longest section of the falls led to a "nur fur geubte", (only for experienced), track to the Hoher Fricken. That was more than I could resist, so I enjoyed some good exercise on the steep but easy lower zig zgs to get a high view of yet another part of the falls, before heading back down towards Farchant.
A final look at the lowest of what must be an amazing series of waterfalls to visit just after heavy rain. But weather I'll never be keen to experience for too long in an area of Bavaria that, yet again, had given me some superb mountain hiking during my short four day trip.
