Lathkill Dale Walking in Derbyshire for me had started with local expert "Sunnydale" up on the High Peaks. But I knew from her short written walk descriptions that the Dales walks would also provide a great walking experience. As was to be shown in Lathkill Dale

Lathkill Dale Walk, 3rd Oct 2008 River in Lathkill Dale

Lathkill Dale is quite short, but very scenic. And with a shallow and quite fast flowing river running through a large part of the Dale. Here reflecting the sun on a lovely day for walking.

The path headed through woods by the river. Passing some signs that looked rather old! Indeed it must be unclear how much would need to be paid now if walking through here on The Thursday of Easter week!

No doubt that this sign is a lot more recent. And a lot more use to the many people who enjoy walking these paths.

Old Mine in Lathkill Dale Old Mine Engine House in Lathkill Dale

All along the Dale were signs of extensive mine workings. Here the remains of an old engine house now partially obscured form the main path by extensive tree growth.

Further on was a quite deep shaft, with a ladder leading down. Below that was a handle to wind, which generated enough electricity to power lights set lower down in an adjoining shaft that was below river level!

Lathkill Dale Walk, 3rd Oct 2008 Weir in Lathkill Dale

Ever present in the first part of our walk was the river. Frequently passing over weirs and small falls, as seen in this and the next two photos.

It was by one of the small but noisy weirs that we briefly stopped. To enjoy a drink and to soak in the atmosphere of my first Dale!

Lathkill Dale Walk, 3rd Oct 2008 Lathkill Dale

After a while the Dale widened and we left the trees largely behind us. To reveal a rocky and steep side to the Dale.

The river was still by our side, and crossed at this point by a lovely wooden bridge reached by a small stone causeway.

As our progress continued the river, which was being fed at various points along the Dale, started to become noticably narrower.

And then we reached the source of the river that wound though Lathkill Dale. A small cave entrance with water rushing out and into the still bright Autumn day.

Lathkill Dale Walk, 3rd Oct 2008 Rocks by the side of Lathkill Dale

We stopped for lunch by the side of the cave and it's rushing water. With the rocky side of the Dale high above us and still in bright sunshine.

After our pleasant lunch stop we retraced our steps along the Dale. The same route we had walked earlier, but a totally different view as we headed back.

Lathkill Dale Walk, 3rd Oct 2008 Lathkill Dale

As I was finding everywhere in the Dark and White Peak district there were plentiful dry stone walls. Often crossed by the footpaths with "styles" also made out of local stone.

A final view of the Dale as we got close to our morning starting point. A Derbyshire walk so different from the High Peaks walked a few weeks earlier. But one with as much, if not more points of interest.
